Witt made the final play in one of the great Gamecock comebacks in 1952, as USC scored three touchdowns in three minutes to defeat Virginia. Witt hit Virginia quarterback Charlie Harding and forced a fumble that teammate Bob King recovered in the end zone for the winning score. He coached as an assistant at Palmetto (FL) High School, and then went on to a long career as an administrator in the Bradenton school system. The school system opened Gene Witt Elementary School, named in his honor, in 1994. |
