Biography |
---|
A transfer from Auburn where he started in the backfield with future Georgia coach Vince Dooley on the Tigers’ 1950 freshman team, Wohrman was one of the finest blockers of his era and a standout at both fullback and linebacker. He missed the season opener against Wofford in 1952 with an injury but shared time at fullback the rest of the season with Hootie Johnson. In 1953 his interception set up a Carolina touchdown in a 20-14 upset of West Virginia. He missed two games in ’53 with a leg injury but returned for the finale against Clemson. That season he won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for both the state of South Carolina and the ACC. He was also named All-State. He had a key touchdown run in the 34-20 upset of Army in September 1954 and also contributed a TD in the 19-6 win over The Citadel. Wohrman finished the year with a two touchdown game, including the game winner, in a 20-19 victory over Wake Forest. He again won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy and the ACC Blocking Trophy before going on to play in the North-South Shrine Game. Wohrman also played baseball for the Gamecocks and was nominated for the McKevlin Award in 1955 which goes to the ACC’s top all-around athelete. Wohrman was signed by the Cleveland Browns of the NFL in 1955 but was released during training camp. He coached for a stint in the high school ranks in Florida but found a second career doing modeling in his late forties and fifties. He continued that work while teaching P.E. at a junior high in Sunrise, Florida. Wohrman was inducted into the USC Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. |
