Biography
Playing for his father Cecil at Chapin, Woolbright led the Eagles to the 1973 Class AA state championship, defeating Bamberg-Ehrhardt to the win the title. An All-State selection by both the AP and the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, Woolbright injured his shoulder in that game and so played defensive back in the Shrine Bowl that year. He did play quarterback in the North –South All-Star Game in August 1974. He was 31-4 in three years as Chapin’s starting quarterback. Woolbright was also named one of the top 100 high school player in the country by Coach And Athlete Magazine. As both his father and his old brother (Marty) were Gamecock lettermen, Roger was destined to wear the Garnet and Black. As a true freshman Woolbright saw some time while backing up Zeb Shue and Russ Manzari at rover. He redshirted in 1975 while moving to defensive end and backup Manzari at end in 1976 and John Dantonio in 1977. He started several games in 1978 and led the team in sacks; Woolbright’s biggest game that season came in a tie with 18th ranked Kentucky when he intercepted two passes, including one with under two minutes to go at the USC 24.
