A two-sport star at Lanier High, Wright was offered scholarships to Georgia (for basketball) and Georgia Tech (for football) and signed on with the Yellow Jackets after leading Lanier to the 1945 state championship in basketball. Wright decided he wasn’t cut out to be an engineering student and transferred to South Carolina after the 1946 season. Injuries hindered his football career, but off the field Wright was a standout, being named president of the student body. He served in the military in Europe and Korea and then had a long career in sales. He founded the Sports Champions of Greater Atlanta Hall of Fame in 2002 to honor high school students who excelled on the field and in the classroom. |
