WALKER YONCE
Halfback
1932 / 1934
Johnston, SC
Biography
A regular at halfback, Yonce’s best game may have come in a 20-0 win over Virginia Tech in November of 1934. He caught a touchdown pass from Hal Mauney and kicked two extra points. He also victimized Tech the year before with a 72-yard punt return that set up an Earl Clary touchdown run in a 12-0 Carolina victory. As a sophomore his best game may have been a 2-touchdown performance against Wofford that included a 38-yard TD run. A foot injury suffered against Furman slowed him in the 1934 season finale against Washington & Lee. Yonce, who also played baseball at USC went on to manage semi-pro baseball teams in Hartsville, Kingstree and Georgetown before becoming a teacher and coach at Ridgeland and Kingstree High Schools. He passed away in February 1995 in Johnston, S.C.
