The Gamecocks completed their season with their first ever matchup against the Miami Hurricanes. A promising start to a year that saw Carolina knock off Florida and Virginia Tech had fallen apart, with four straight losses heading into the Miami trip. The Hurricanes on the other hand, were 5-2-2 and had won three of their last four. There was no scoring in the first half as the two teams traded punts and defensive stops and the first points came in the third came on a 20-yard field goal by Miami tackle Jack Dicker. The Gamecocks' highlight would come a few minutes later as Miami punted. Carolina halfback Jack Lyons actually fumbled the kick at first, but then picked it up and weaved his way upfield, not stopping until he reached the Hurricane end zone sixty yards later. Art Urbanyi's extra point was blocked, leaving USC with a narrow 6-3 lead. The fourth quarter was all about narrow escapes for Carolina as the Hurricanes' Eddie Dunn hit teammate Bob Masterson with a 36-yard pass to the USC six but Miami was unable to gain a single yard on the next four plays. Miami had one more threat in them, and Dunn and Masterson hooked up for another long pass, but Lyons was able to knock Masterson out of bounds after a 40-yard gain and USC then picked off Dunn to end the final rally. Carolina ended the season with a 5-7 record.; |
