| Carolina improved to 3-0 after running over Georgia 30-14 in Columbia, led by backup fullback Phil Lavoie, who rushed for 77 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Lavoie was filling in for injured All-ACC fullback John Saunders and made the most of his playing time as the Massachusetts native battered the Bulldogs. The Gamecocks ran the ball 65 times against a Bulldog line that had an outstanding reputation. Quarterback Steve Satterfield didn't throw a single pass, though he did carry the ball 11 times. USC's only two pass attempts (both completed to halfback Steve Kopian) came from halfback Ken Norton and backup quarterback Harvey Shiflet. Carolina raced to a 24-0 lead before the Bulldogs finally got on the board, scoring once on a touchdown pass by Fran Tarkenton and another by Charlie Britt. USC's first score came when Kirk Phares recovered a Tarkenton fumble at the UGA 17 and reserve QB Jim Costen rushed for a one yard TD, then scored the two point conversion to make it 8-0. A 36-yard punt return by Kopian set up the second score, a one-yarder by Lavoie. Early in the third another Georgia fumble, this one recovered by Shiflet, set up Lavoie's second touchdown. USC's final touchdown came after Ed Pitts recovered a Tarkenton fumble at the Bulldog 27 and Lavoie went the distance on the next play.The Gamecocks jumped from #16 to #11 in the polls nationally, even earning three first place votes while Georgia fell from #13 all the way out of the top twenty.; |
