| The defending ACC champ Gamecocks used dominant performances in the ground game on both sides of the ball to pummel Wake Forest 43-7 and pick up their first win of the season. The first quarter wasn't a reflection of the rest of the game, as it ended tied 7-7 after Tommy Suggs found Mike Haggard for a 31-yard touchdown and Wake countered with a 61-yard touchdown run. From there on it was all Carolina, as USC outrushed Wake 300 yards to 60 and picked off four Deacon passes. Chuck Mimms scored on two touchdown runs, while Billy Ray Rice (12-79-1) and Ken Walkup (11-71-0) also had strong days. Suggs threw a second touchdown pass as well, a seven-yarder to Jackie Brown. Among the Gamecocks who came up with interceptions were Dickie Harris, Candler Boyd, Bo Davies and Mack Lee Tharpe, while Don Brant, Jimmy Poston, Ken Wheat, Kevin Mooney and Joe Wingard all had sacks.
