| #18 South Carolina and #17 Mississippi State got a national stage on a Thursday night as the first college football game since the 9/11 terror attacks. The Gamecocks relied solely on the ground troops in this one as the two teams played a smashmouth game that saw Carolina pass for just 60 yards. The Bulldogs scored on their opening drive of the game, marching 67 yards for a two-yard touchdown run, but the Carolina defense would shut them down for most of the next three quarters. USC answered the touchdown with one of their own, as Andrew Pinnock broke loose on a 35-yard touchdown run to tie the score. It would be all Gamecock kicker Daniel Weaver from there, as he made one field goal in the second and two in the third quarter for the only scoring in those periods. His 28 yarder with 22 seconds left in the third pushed the lead to 16-7. Mississippi State did mount a late rally, as Wayne Madkin threw a touchdown pass to Harold Lindsey from seven yards out, but with only 22 seconds remaining in the game it was too little too late for the Bulldogs.
