In the most disappointing loss of the season to date, Carolina dropped a mid week game that saw the Gamecocks get only five hits off a beleaguered Citadel staff that had an ERA of almost six. The Citadel manufactured a run in the game's opening inning with a bunt followed by an RBI groundout. Carolina matched the run on a pair of walks to Noah Campbell and TJ Hopkins and Campbell would score on an error by the shortstop. A sac fly by Campbell in the second scored Carlos Cortes and put Carolina in the lead, but some sloppy defense would cause that lead to slip away in the fifth. A home run by Cortes to lead on the seventh tied the game back at 3 and it looked like USC might take the lead in the eighth when Madison Stokes led off the inning with a triple. Unfortunately the Carolina bats failed and Stokes was still standing at third when the inning ended. The Citadel's Ben Peden then led off the ninth with a homer off Parker Coyne to go up 4-3. Cortes led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, but USC went quietly after that with two strikeouts and a pop out.
