The visiting Gamecocks won the game in dramatic fashion as a two-run homer in the 13th inning by Paul Hollins provided the margin of victory in a 3-1 win over Mercer. USC relied on some brilliant relief pitching from Hal Gaalema, who took over from Dennis Lubert in the 7th. Gaalema pitched 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits and striking out eight. The Bears' leadoff hitter reached in the bottom of the 13th and Jeff Twitty came on in relief for USC and got a force out followed by a double play to end the game. The final two outs came on a long fly ball that LF Wes Westbrook snared and doubled off a Mercer runner.
