Harvey Heise's walk-off 3-run homer ended a wild back and forth game with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Carolina led first, scoring three in the bottom of the third and was up 4-1 after five. Ohio State rallied, going up 5-4 in the top of the fifth, but the Gamecocks tied the game in their half of the inning. Ohio State went back on top in the top of the 7th as Robbie Cobb, the son of a USC alum, homered off Mike Werner. The score remained 6-5 until the bottom of the 9th, when USC's Jeff Swindell opened the inning with a single off the Buckeyes' Jeff Aurentz. After a fly out Chris Boyle added another single. Coach Raines substituted with two pinch runners at that point, but it was unnecessary as Heise hit Aurentz's first pitch into the stands in left center.
