The Gamecocks' John Coleman outdueled Maryland's John Klvac, beating the Terps 2-1 in a nail-biter of an ACC game. The sole run Coleman allowed came in the third when Jim Watkins walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Tom Bichy. USC scored both of its runs in the fourth with the help of some sloppiness from the visiting Terrapins. Al Barnett singled, followed by a walk to Dan Reeves. Both runners moved up with Maryland tried to pick Barnett off second. With runners on second and third a wild pitch from Klvac scored Barnett and moved Reeves to third and he scored from there on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Christopher. Coleman made the lead stand up from there by scattering seven hits.
