For the third straight year the Gamecocks lost to North Carolina in large part due to a pitching staff that couldn't keep from handing out free passes on walks and hit batsmen. USC fell 11-3 in this one, though it actually had a 3-1 lead after the first three innings. The Tar Heels scored first, but the Gamecocks countered in the bottom of the first as Jacob Olson doubled then scored on an RBI single by Jonah Bride. USC wasted scoring opportunities from there, as Bride's single left runners on the corners with no outs but the Gamecocks failed to add any more runs in that inning. Chris Cullen opened the second with a solo home run to give USC its first lead and LT Tolbert led off the third with a walk and eventually scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Matt Williams. Again in the third the Gamecocks missed some prime scoring opportunities. Starter Logan Chapman looked good for USC through five but then walked back to back Tar Heels in the sixth. Parker Coyne came on and walked a batter, then John Gilreath replaced him and walked in a run. A wild pitch from Gilreath brought home another run and tied the game at three. UNC then scored four in the eighth off Carmen Mlodzinski and Eddy Demurias and added four month in the ninth off Hunter Lomas, TJ Shook and Graham Lawson.
