| Carolina improved to 5-2 by smoking Maryland 31-0 at home. The Gamecocks started the game by forcing a three and out from the Terrapins then immediately went on the march, going sixty three yards in nine plays with just one pass. Warren Muir started the drive with an eleven yard run and finished it the same way, taking in to the end zone from the Terp 11. After two more Maryland three and outs Carolina took on another long drive, this time going 67 yards in eight plays. The big play this time was a 35-yard pass from Mike Fair to Johnny Gregory that finished at the UM one. Fullback Curtis Williams took it in from there for a 14-0 lead. Jimmy Poole's 30-yard field goal made it a 17-0 halftime lead. The next Gamecock drive came in the third quarter and was set up by Joe Komoroski and Gene Schwarting stuffing a fourth and two run by Maryland for just a single yard. The USC drive stalled at the Terp 45, but a personal foul gave Carolina new life and eventually Fair scored on a four yard run to make it 24-0. The final score came when UM quarterback Chuck Drimal coughed the ball up and USC reserve defensive lineman George McCarthy plucked it out of the air and rumbled 17 yards for a touchdown.; |
