| Twenty eight years to the day before the 2016 matchup with East Carolina the Gamecocks shut out the Pirates 17-0. The first half was an offensive struggle for both teams. ECU's Robb Imperato missed a 47 yard field goal, but on the next possession USC's Collin Mackie made his attempt, a 52-yarder that accounted for the only points of the first half. The game really turned about five mintues into the third quarter. East Carolina had driven deep in to USC territory and faced a 4th and two at the Gamecock six. ECU's Reggie McKinney gained three yards for a first down, but the fumbled and USC's Stephane Williams recovered at the Gamecock three. On the next play Todd Ellis found true freshman Robert Brooks on the sideline and Brooks made a beautiful juke that caused two Pirates defenders to take each other out; Brooks went the rest of the way for a 97-yard touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter USC's Mike Conway intercepted a Pirate pass and returned it to the ECU 25. Two Gerald Williams runs and a pass interference penalty gave the Gamecocks a first and goal with thirty seconds left and Ellis threw a six yard TD pass to Brooks to finish the scoring off at 17-0. In addition to Conway and Williams' plays, David Taylor, Corey Miller, Ron Rabune and Derrick Frazier all had big days on defense to help shut out the Pirates. ; |
