Game Summary
Off to a 3-0 start, the Gamecocks hosted 2-1 Alabama at Williams-Brice and the two teams put on one of the great topsy-turvy scoring shows in Carolina history. The Gamecocks would eventually prevail 37-36 but the only time they had a lead was in the final 2:18 following a touchdown pass from Phil Petty to Rod Trafford. Alabama led 6-0 at the end of the first and would hold a commanding 23-10 halftime lead. USC's only first half scores came on a Daniel Weaver 43-yard field goal and a 43-yard touchdown pass from Petty to Brian Scott. Carolina scored on its first possession of the second half with a 9-yard pass from Petty to Ryan Brewer to cut the lead to six, but Alabama answered to make it 29-17. Andrew Pinnock's touchdown run with 1:40 left in the third made it a five point game, but again the Tide answered as QB Tyler Watts rushed nine yards for a score to make it 36-24 with just nine minutes left in the game. The Gamecocks again got within six as Derek Watson's 2-yard run made it 36-30 (the extra point was missed), setting up the critical final six and a half minutes. The Carolina defense then rose up, stuffing Ahmad Galloway for a loss of three on second down and then LB Kenneth Harney and safety Antione Nesmith stopped Santonio Beard for just two yards on third down, forcing a punt. USC took over at their own 44 and after two Petty rushes for 12 yards he found Andrea Gause for 37 yards to move to Alabama's seven yard line. On the next play Petty found tight end Trafford for seven yards to tie the score. Weaver's extra point gave USC their first lead. Alabama had time for one last possession, but Langston Moore tackled Watts for no gain on first down, then after a short pass John Stamper stopped Watts after two yards on third down. That forced fourth down and four with time running out, and the Gamecocks forced an incomplete pass to clinch the win.;
