| There was a lot of hype going into this one, with some thought that Carolina might upset #3 Georgia and put themselves on the road to a possible SEC East title. Unfortunately the game got off to a horrible start for the Gamecocks, bounced back briefly, then went south for good in the third quarter. 47 seconds into the game a Jake Bentley pass bounced off Rico Dowdle and was picked off by Georgia's Deandre Baker, who took it back 55 yards to the SC one before dropping it prematurely. Teammate Juwan Taylor picked up the loose ball and carried it into the end zone for a 7-0 lead. After a USC three and out Georgia marched 76 yards in just four plays to make it 14-0. A 30-yard run by receiver Mecole Hardman, with a 15-yard personal foul against TJ Brunson tacked on, put the ball all the way to the USC 17 and D'Andre Swift would take it the rest of the way on the next play. Carolina showed signs of bouncing back on the next possession, going 75 yards for a touchdown. Jake Bentley had six completions on the drive, including two third down conversions, but the big pass on the drive was thrown by Deebo Samuel. Bentley took a snap then pitched to Samuel, who dropped a nice pass to Bryan Edwards in the end zone to make it 14-7. Rashad Fenton then picked off a pass on Georgia's next possession and it looked like USC might be able to climb back into the game. Two incomplete passes and two rushes for minus-1 yard killed that momentum instead, and the Bulldogs then added a field goal from 45 yards by Rodrigo Blankenship to end the first quarter at 17-7. A third down sack by Keir Thomas and TJ Brunson to stop UGA's first possession of the second quarter and Carolina would drive all the way to the Bulldog six, but a sack and an incomplete pass led to USC settling for a 26-yard field goal by Parker White. Georgia would get the only other points of the second quarter on a 44-yard field goal by Blankenship as time expired. Any thoughts of Carolina getting back into it ended quickly in the third quarter, as Georgia went 75 yards for a TD on its first drive, ending with a 34-yard TD pass from Jake Fromm to Hardman. USC then went three and out and Georgia scored another touchdown, this one a 5-yard run by Elijah Holyfield. That pretty much ended things, though Carolina did add a late touchdown on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Jake Bentley to Bryan Edwards, who finished with seven catches for 111 yards and two scores.; |
