1995 - The Gamecocks won their first ever bowl game, knocking off West Virginia 24-21 at the Carquest Bowl in Miami. Things started well for Carolina, as on the first play from scrimmage as WVA running back Jimmy Gary was hit at the line of scrimmage by USC linebacker Hank Campbell and fumbled. Cornerback Ron Nealy recovered at the Mountaineer 35 and five plays later USC scored on a two-yard pass from Steve Taneyhill to Boomer Foster. That would be all of the first quarter scoring, though Carolina would extend its lead to 10-0 early in the second on a 47-yard field goal by Reed Morton. The Mountaineers got on the board on the next possession as running back Robert Walker ripped off a 36-yard run to get into USC territory, then scored on a 24-yard run to make it 10-7. USC answered immediately though with a 66 yard drive that featured six Taneyhill completions and a 22-yard scramble by the junior from Altoona, PA. Taneyhill would be the one to take the ball into the end zone, as he scored on a four yard to make it 17-7. A Chad Johnston to Lovett Purnell TD just four minutes into the third cut the lead to 17-14, but on the Mountaineers' next possession USC safety Ben Washington picked off Johnston at the USC 9 and returned it 42 yards. A 29-yard run by Brandon Bennett would get Carolina down to the WVA four and Stanley Pritchett took it in from the one two plays later to make 24-14. Before the third quarter could end though West Virginia stormed back and scored again on a pass from Johnston to Purnell with 44 seconds left. USC's two fourth quarter drives ended in a missed 47 yard field goal and a run by Pritchett run that went 28 yards but ended with the big fullback fumbling the ball out of the end zone for a touchback and a turnover. West Virginia stalled at the USC 46 on one drive as Johnston threw incomplete on third and fourth down. Their final drive began at their own three and USC defensive end Stacy Evans sacked Johnston for a loss of two on the first play. Two incomplete passes followed, leaving fourth and twelve, ninety yards away from the Carolina end zone. Johnston dumped the ball down to Barber, but he was stuffed after just three yards by Evans and Tony Watkins to clinch the win for the Gamecocks.
