| The 800th win in the school's volleyball history was a memorable one, as they swept three sets from Clemson to a complete a 3-0 run through the Gamecock Invitational tournament. Carolina didn't lose a set over the three games and Mikayla Shields was named tournament MVP. Set one saw USC trailing early at 6-5 but Courtney Koehler (kill, assist and two blocks) and Mikayla Robinson (kill and two blocks) keyed a four-point run to take a lead the Gamecocks would never give back. A five point run later would give USC a 16-10 lead including a kill and a block by Claire Edwards and a kill by Shields. A three point run by the Tigers late would make it interesting, but kills by Shields and Jess Vastine finished the set off. Set two would feature an early run by Carolina to take a 5-2 lead behind some good serves from Savannah Murray, including an ace. Clemson would fight back, and was close at 15-14, but a service error by the Tigers, followed by an ace by Aubrey Ezell and a kill by Brittany McLean but USC ahead 18-14. A kill by McLean eventually finished off the set with USC winning 25-22. The momentum carried over to the final set, as Carolina took the first three points behind a kill from Koehler and two attack errors by the Tigers on serves from Koehler. Two kills by Vastine pushed the lead to 7-2 and USC would keep a fairly commanding lead the rest of the way. Clemson did make a late run to get within 20-17, but a kill by Mikayla Robinson launched a four point run and a kill by Robinson would finish off the match at 25-18. |
